Statement of Philosophy

York College of the City University of New York is a four-year, senior college offering baccalaureate degree programs in the liberal arts and sciences, professional programs, and teacher education.  Recently, York College initiated its first Masters Degree in Occupational Therapy.

York College is a member in good-standing of the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Division III.

York College places equal importance on the goals and objectives of the competition and spectatorship and fosters an atmosphere of collegiality and competitiveness and a “love and enjoyment of the sport,” not merely competition for the extrinsic award.  The York College Cardinals are guided by the principles of sportsmanship, mutual respect and discipline and are challenged to achieve as individuals and members of their respective teams.

To this end, the college places greatest emphasis on in-region, regular season competition and CUNYAC championship.  At no time, do the goals and objectives of competition out-weigh student athletes’ physical, mental and emotional well-being.

Guided by the principals of fair and equitable treatment and the NCAA requirement supporting gender equity, York College sponsors fifteen competitive teams: eight men’s teams and seven women’s teams.

York College embraces the philosophy of Division III competition and honors academic first and athletes second.  Student athletes at York College are encouraged to be scholar-athletes as evidence by the academic good standing requirements of the college, which exceeds the minimum grade point average for graduation and applies to all athletes regardless of curriculum level.
