– The York College men’s soccer team fought hard but fell to Stevens Institute of Technology by a score of 2-0 in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament Thursday evening.

York (12-8) came into the match as a major underdog and was missing three of its starters due to injury.  However, York hung in there and battled to a scoreless tie at halftime thanks to strong defensive play from freshmen Jaime Hay and Brian Broadbelt, as well as sophomore keeper Samer Abdel-Fattah.   Stevens (16-3-1) dominated time of possession and outshot York 7-0 in the first half. They would hold a 25-2 shot advantage by the end of the match.

In the second half, Stevens continued to put on the pressure and finally broke through in the 70th minute. The Duck’s Chris Faustino crossed the ball from the left corner to Todd Sheridan who slid and put the ball in on the right post for the score.

York’s best chance for the equalizer came in the 79th minute on York’s only corner kick of the match.  The kick from Elysee Vilsaint was well-placed but Stevens keeper Zach Carr was able to bat the ball out of the box and away from danger.  One minute later, Stevens put the game out of reach when Terrence Johnson found Michale Quijano who found the right corner of the net for a 2-0 advantage.

With the win, Stevens advances to the second round where they will meet Montclair State on Sunday.
