Wickham Leads York to Win in Season Opener

NEW HAVEN, CT– Sophomore forward Kadisha Wickham scored a career-high 24 points on 11-16 shooting, pulled down six boards, swiped four steals and blocked two shots to lead the York College women's basketball team to a 77-55 win over Albertus Magnus College in its season opener Sunday afternoon.  

Sophomore April Jones also scored 16 points and junior Maimouna Dabo added 16 points and five assists as York defeated the Lady Falcons for the second time in as many seasons.

 

The two teams were squared at 16-16 midway through the first half when York exploded for a 15-0 run over a five minute span.  Wickham led York with six points during the run.   The Lady Cardinals would take a 35-20 lead into the locker room.

 

In the second half, York continued to pour it on and extended its lead to as many as 28 points after a lay-up by Dabo with 15:01 left to play.  Albertus Magnus never got within 20 points the rest of the way.

 

York shot well from the field all day, hitting 49 percent of its shots, while holding the Lady Falcons to 37 percent.  The Lady Cardinals also won the turnover battle as they forced 30 turnovers, while only committing 19. 

 

York (1-0) will visit the College of New Rochelle on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
