York Eliminated by CCNY in CUNYAC Quarterfinals

— The York College women’s volleyball team saw its season come to an end Tuesday evening with a 3-0 (25-7, 25-12, 25-4) loss to second-seeded CCNY in the quarterfinals of the CUNY Athletic Conference championships. 

 

Floriana Garo, led CCNY (22-12) as she compiled a 0.688 hitting percentage with 12 kills and one error in 16 attempts; she also added two aces and five digs for the match. Zuleyka Polanco and Melissa Blass contributed seven and four kills respectively to their teams’ winning effort. Nicole Cascone had a solid all around game as she added three kills, seven digs, a match-high six service aces and 22 assists.

 

For the Lady Cardinals, Pamela Lebron would get two kills and four digs, while fellow teammate Cinthia Guerrero would help in the defensive end with four digs. Charlina Gallegos contributed with her service game as she got a team-high two service aces.

 

The Beavers, whom are hosting the CUNYAC Championships, will next face third-seeded Hunter College in the semifinals on November 6th at 5 p.m.. The winner of the match will move on to the CUNYAC Finals at 8 PM.

 

York finishes the 2009 season with a record of 7-20.

NEW YORK, NY— The York College athletics program placed third in 2009-10 Commissioner Cup standings, earning its highest finish ever.  The Cardinals recorded 80 points thanks in part to winning five CUNYAC championships this past school year. Baruch College won the title, scoring 143 points, while Hunter College was second with 80 points.  The winner was announced at the Michael Steuerman Scholar-Athlete dinner at Baruch College Wednesday evening.

 

Senior track and field and cross country star, Alexandra Nkrumah, and senior setter, Charlina Gallegos, from the women’s volleyball team were among the York College athletes who were honored at the dinner for excelling on the field of play and in the classroom.

FLUSHING, NY— The pairings for the upcoming CUNY Athletic Conference Women’s Volleyball tournament have been announced and the York College women’s volleyball team, the seventh seed, will take on the second-seeded CCNY on Tuesday, November 3 at 7 p.m.  The Cardinals will go on the road to CCNY in hopes of pulling the upset.
