RANDALLS
ISLAND, NY – The York College women’s track and field team won its third straight City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) championship Tuesday and they did it in dominating fashion.  The Lady Cardinals squad amassed 231 team points, which was a remarkable 80 points more than the second place team, Lehman College, who finished with 151 points.

The Lady Cardinals held a 40-point advantage after day one of the competition on Sunday and they doubled their advantage on day two to run away with the meet. It is the fourth title in the history of the women’s outdoor track and field program.  The Lady Cardinals previously won in 2002, 2007 and 2008.

Alexandra Nkrumah, earned her third most valuable performer award in as many years, contributing 56 points to her teams total.

York dominated the event from start to finish, but perhaps its best event of the day came in the 800-meter run.   Nkrumah, Taneisha Renaud, Alexis Schloss and Sheena Murray took first, third, fourth and fifth respectively among senior colleges, earning a combined 30 points for their team.

Later in the evening, Renaud (20:29.57) and Schloss (20:58.13) also came up big in the 5,000 meters, finishing 1-2 overall.  Maria Amate also finished fifth (22:47.82) to earn points for her team.

Nkrumah, meanwhile, dominated the 400-meter hurdles, finishing first in a time of 1:07.89, nearly five seconds faster than her closest competitor.  Nkrumah then went on to finish second in the triple-jump with a distance of 10.79 meters.

In other field events, Shanine Bogan earned a pair of second place finishes in the hammer throw (34.14m) and the javelin (22.01m).

York then closed out the evening with a second place finish in the 4x400 relay.  The team of Nkrumah, Kadisha Wickham, Allana Paul and Wendella Rankin turned in their best time of the season, completing the race in a time of 4:04.72.

York will now travel to Springfield, MA to compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships on Thursday and Friday.
