Late Rally Falls Short as York Falls to Staten Island, 76-73

Wickham Nets 29 Points and Grabs 24 Boards in Losing Effort

STATEN ISLAND, NY – The York College women’s basketball team nearly overcame an 11-point second-half deficit, but in the end fell short and lost 76-73 to the College of Staten Island in a CUNY Athletic Conference contest Saturday afternoon. 

 

The Lady Cardinals found themselves trailing by 11 (59-48) after a three-pointer by the Dolphins’ Denise Zajonc with 10:27 to play in the game.  York then rallied over the next three minutes and closed to within one point (63-62) after a lay-up by Kadisha Wickham with 7:13 to play.  York’s Maimounda Dabo and April Jones each scored six points during the run to bring the Lady Cardinals back. 

 

It was still a one-point game (74-73) with 51 seconds remaining.  York had the ball with a chance to take the lead but turned the ball over back to CSI.  The Dolphins missed a three-pointer on the ensuing possession but grabbed the offensive board. With time running out, York was forced to foul and send the Dolphins to free throw line. CSI’s Danille McLaughlin had made both free throws to put the Dolpins back up by three points.  York had 12 seconds left to attempt a game-tying shot but could never get one off before time expired. 

 

Wickham continued her phenomenal play for York, as she established new career-high in points (29) and rebounds (24), while also blocking six shots and swiping five steals.  Dabo also set a career-high, scoring 25 points, while dishing out eight assists.  Jones paced York with 11 points and eight boards as York fell to 6-7, 1-2 in the CUNYAC. .

 

CSI got 18 points and ten boards from Allie Shannahan, while McLaughlin also finished with 18 points. Zajonc paced the Dolphins with 10 points, who improved to 5-7, 3-1 in the CUNYAC.

 

York will host Baruch College on Monday at 6:00 p.m.
