Esonwune Reaches Milestone; York Wins Eighth Straight

Box Score

JAMAICA, NY—Junior center Marcel Esonwune recorded his 1000th career point and the York College men’s basketball team cruised to a 75-55 victory over conference-foe John Jay College on Monday afternoon.

Esonwune reached the milestone on his last bucket of the night, a lay-up with 3:36 to play, which gave him 16 for the night and 1,001 career points.  Esonwune becomes the seventh player in school history to reach the milestone and the first since Kwesi Liverpool in 2006.

The Cardinals controlled the game from start to finish, never trailing in the contest.  York quickly jumped out to a 7-0 lead after a three-pointer by Elijah Evelyn two minutes into the game.  They continued to pile it on and quickly gained a 15-point advantage (22-7) after a three-pointer by Nicholas Hamilton-Lopez with 10:34 to play in the half.  York extended its lead to 20 points at halftime, after a Jeremiah Fuller lay-up closed out the half.

John Jay played with York in the second half, matching its total of 35 points but never threatened the lead.  John Jay struggled from the field, shooting just 33 percent overall and 8 percent from long range.

The Bloodhounds were led by Chris Jaeger who registered a double-double, scoring a team-high 15 points and grabbing ten boards. Lionel Lorquet also picked up a double-double with ten points and ten boards.  Tyler Clarke added 11 points for John Jay.

York was led by Hamilton-Lopez who finished with a game-high 22 points, while also dishing out nine assists. Esonwune finished with 14 boards and five steals in addition to his 16 points.  Keith Thornton added nine points off the bench.

The Cardinals, winners of eight straight, improve to 12-5 and 6-0 in the CUNY Athletic Conference.  John Jay falls to 1-14 and 0-5 in the CUNYAC.

York will visit Hunter College on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

JAMAICA, NY— The York College men's basketball team won a wild contest with conference-rival Lehman College on Friday evening by a score 74-70.

With the score tied at 70-70 with Lehman holding for a final shot, the Lightning's Phil Ductan had his shot blocked by York's Shamir Wilkinson.  Wilkinson was fouled after coming down with the rebound with just 0.5 seconds left in the game.  Lehman did not agree with the call and a pair of arguments by a Lehman player and its head coach resulted in a pair of technical fouls that gave Cardinals four free throws in addition to the original two.  York hit four of the six shots to seal the game.
