Wilkinson Named CUNYAC Rookie of the Week

JAMAICA, NY— York College freshman Shamir Wilkinson has been named the CUNY Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for the period ending January 24, 2010. 

 

Wilkinson put together one of the best weeks of his young career, averaging 11.3 points and 7.7 rebounds in three games.  Against John Jay on Monday, Wilkinson scored eight points and grabbed seven boards in a 75-55 victory.  Then on Wednesday, Wilkinson added 14 points and eight rebounds in a 68-65 win over Hunter College.  He then closed out the week with a 12-point, eight-rebound performance in a 90-58 win over Berkeley College. 

 

On the season, Wilkinson is averaging 5.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.  Since being thrust into a starting role however, Wilkinson is averaging 9.4 points and 6.6 boards per game.

 

The Cardinals (14-5) are winners of ten straight and will visit CCNY on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

York Head Men’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Ronald St. John was honored by the Laurelton Lions Club with its Community Service Award. 

 

St. John was honored with the Community Service Award on May 23 at the Laurelton Lions Club 30th Charter Anniversary Celebration on May 23.  He also received a citation from the New York City Council recognizing his over 30 years of service to the York College community.

The York College athletics program held its 35th annual awards dinner Monday evening and handed out a number of awards to some deserving student-athletes.  Marcel Esonwune of the men’s basketball team and Kadisha Wickham of the women’s basketball team and track and field team were named the 2010 York College Athletes of the Year.

JAMAICA, NY— One day after being named D3hoops.com Regional Player of the Year, York College junior center, Marcel Esonwune was announced as the 2009-10 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro Division Men’s Basketball Player of the Year.  Senior guard Nicholas Hamilton-Lopez was selected to the first team.
