Esonwune Wins Player of the Week for Third Time this Season

JAMAICA, NY— York College junior center, Marcel Esonwune has been named the CUNY Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the period ending January 24, 2010  It is the third time this season Esonwune has won the award. 

 

Esonwune helped the lead the Cardinals to a 3-0 week, which extended York’s winning streak to ten games.  On Monday, in a 75-55 win over John Jay, he netted 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.  In addition, he recorded his 1,000th career point on his final basket of the game, becoming just the seventh player in York College history to do so.

 

On Wednesday, Esonwune had his best game of the week, scoring 22 points, grabbing 20 rebounds and blocking three shots as York edged Hunter College, 68-65.  He then closed out the week with another double-double, scoring 26 points and grabbing 12 boards in a 90-58 route of Berkeley College.

 

On the season, Esonwune is averaging 17.4 points, 14.9 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game.  He leads the nation in rebounds per game and is second in the country in blocks per game. 

 

York (14-5) will visit CCNY on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

York Head Men’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Ronald St. John was honored by the Laurelton Lions Club with its Community Service Award. 

 

St. John was honored with the Community Service Award on May 23 at the Laurelton Lions Club 30th Charter Anniversary Celebration on May 23.  He also received a citation from the New York City Council recognizing his over 30 years of service to the York College community.
