Lady Cardinals Rally in Second Half to Top CCNY

, NY— The York College women’s basketball team outscored CCNY by 12 points in the second half to overcome a five-point halftime deficit and defeat the Beavers 72-65 on Wednesday evening.

 

Kadisha Wickham had a big game for York, leading all scorers with 23 points, while also grabbing nine rebounds.  Niya Jarvis had arguably her best game of the season, scoring 19 points (7-11) and grabbing 15 rebounds and  Elizabeth Padilla paced York with 12 points. York improves to 9-10, 4-4 in the CUNYAC with the win.

 

After a see-saw game for the most of the first half, the Beavers scored the final five points before halftime to take a 34-29 lead into the locker room.  Three minutes into the second half, with the scored tied at 41-41, York opened up an 8-0 capped off by a lay-up by Wickham with 14:48 to play.

 

The Lady Cardinals looked to be in control of the game, as they extended their lead to as many as 13 points in the second half.  The Beavers rallied late, however, and closed to within three points (62-59) after a jumper by Taryn VanEsselstyn with 1:56 to play. However, a jumper by Shayna Smith and two made free throws by Padilla on consecutive possessions quickly put York back up by seven points.  The Lady Cardinals continued to make their free throws in the final minute and sealed the victory.

 

CCNY was led by Ashley Straughn who recorded a double-double, netting 23 points and grabbing 13 boards.  VanEsselstyn added 13 points for the Beavers who feel to 6-13, 3-6 in the CUNYAC.

 

York will visit City Tech on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
