Esonwune Nets 30 Points in Win Over City Tech

BROOKLYN, NY – Junior Marcel Esonwune netted 30 points, on 14-18 shooting, and grabbed 18 boards to lead the York College men’s basketball team to a 98-67 victory over City Tech on Friday evening.  The Cardinals have now won 12 straight and improve to 16-5, 9-0 in the CUNYAC.

 

The Cardinals quickly jumped out an 18-8 lead after a three-pointer by Elijah Evelyn with 15 minutes to play before halftime.  After a short run by City Tech (2-18, 1-8 CUNYAC0 that closed the gap to within five points, the Cardinals continued to pile on the points and went into the locker room with an 18-point advantage (53-35).  The second half was more of the same, with York leading by as many as 35 points, before ending the game with a  31-point advantage.

 

The key to the game was rebounding. York out-rebounded the Yellow Jackets 61-34 and had 20 second-chance points to City Tech’s four.   York also shot 43 percent, compared to the Yellow Jackets 37 percent.

 

Nicholas Hamilton-Lopez also finished with a double-double, recording 16 points and 11 assists. Evelyn added 12 points, while David Simon scored ten points off the bench.  City Tech was led by Gabriel Davis who finished with 23 points. 

 

York will return to action on Wednesday when they host the College of Staten Island at 8:00 p.m.

St. John was honored with the Community Service Award on May 23 at the Laurelton Lions Club 30th Charter Anniversary Celebration on May 23.  He also received a citation from the New York City Council recognizing his over 30 years of service to the York College community.
