Box Score

JAMAICA, NY— The York College women’s basketball team picked up its best win of the season, defeating rival Brooklyn College, 61-57 on Friday evening.

Brooklyn beat York rather handedly the first time around and came into the game with one of the best records in the CUNYAC.  It appeared early on that Brooklyn would have little trouble with York once again, as they held a comfortable lead for most of the first half.  The Bridges would take a four point lead (25-21) going into the locker room.

The key to the game in the first half was the play of Brooklyn’s Frances Lyons who scored 11 points and grabbed nine points, while holding CUNYAC’s leading scorer, Kadisha Wickham to just two first half points.

However, in the second half Wickham made some adjustments and turned her game up. Wickham scored 15 points in the second half to lead York to the come-from-behind victory.

A key moment in the second half came when Lyons picked her fourth foul of the game with 10:55 to play in the and the Bulldogs holding a 43-36 advantage.   Her absence was felt immediately as York went on a 13-0 run to take a 47-43 lead with 7:21 to play.

York extended its lead to eight points (55-47) with 2:16 to play and looked to have the game under control.  The Bulldogs roared back, however, and closed to within two points (56-54) after Priscilla Ramirez drained a three-pointer from well beyond the three-point line with 31 seconds remaining.

Brooklyn was forced to foul and sent York’s Maimouna Dabo to the free throw line. Dabo hit both to put York back up by four points.  After a lay-up by Lyons closed to within two points, York’s Chiquita Greene was fouled and hit one of two to give the Lady Cardinals a three-point advantage (59-56).

On the next possession, Brooklyn got the ball into Lyons who was fouled on a lay-up attempt with just two seconds remaining.  Lyons only hit the back-end of the two free throws and time expired after the in-bounds pass giving York the victory.

Wickham finished with 17 poitns and nine boards, while Elizabeth Padilla added 13 points. Niya Jarvis netted nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds.  Lyons led Brooklyn with 13 points and 13 boards.

York (12-11, 7-5 CUNYAC) will host Lehman College on Monday at 2:00 p.m.
