JAMAICA, NY— For the fourth time this season and for the second consecutive week, York College junior Marcel Esonwune has been named the CUNY Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. In addition, Esonwune was also named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
Esonwune was instrumental in leading York to two more conference victories which extended the Cardinals winning streak to 12 games and improved their record to 16-5, 9-0 in the CUNYAC. On Wednesday, in an 84-72 win over City College, Esonwune recorded a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Then on Friday, he scored a season-high 30 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead York to a 98-67 thumping of New York City Tech.
Esonwune ranks among the nation’s elite this season and is leading NCAA Division III in rebounding, averaging 15.3 boards per game. He is also tied for second in the country in blocked shots (3.3 bpg) and is scoring 18.2 points per game.
York will host the College of Staten Island on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.
