Cabrera Wins Third CUNYAC Rookie of the Week Honors

JAMAICA, NY—For the third time this season, York College freshman Arturo Cabrera Jr. has been named the CUNY Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week.  Cabrera previously won the award the weeks of February 1st and February 8th, 2010.

 

Cabrera had a solid week, leading York to a 2-2 record. In two matches against Baruch College, the top-ranked team in the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association, he slammed eight and seven kills respectively.  Then on Saturday, at the CUNYAC multi-match Cabrera had a pair of big performances.  Against Medgar Evers, he recorded 15 kills (.478) and five blocks to lead York to a 3-0 triumph.  He then banged 13 kills (.385) and added 15 digs to lead York to a 3-0 win over Brooklyn College.

 

On the season, Cabrera Jr. leads the team in kills per game (2.36) and is second in digs per game (1.49).

 

York (9-11, 5-5 CUNYAC) will host City College on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

JAMAICA, NY— The York College men’s volleyball team wrapped up the regular season Sunday afternoon, dropping matches to Stevenson University and New Jersey City University in a tri-match at NJCU.  The Cardinals fell to Stevenson 3-0 (30-17, 30-13, 30-17) and lost to NJCU 3-0 (30-13, 30-11, 30-24).

JAMAICA, NY— The York College men’s volleyball team has earned the fourth seed in the upcoming CUNY Athletic Conference Tournament and they will host the City College of New York on Tuesday, March 23 at 7:00 p.m.

JAMAICA, NY— Mount Olive College won the 6th Annual York College Men’s Volleyball Classic, after going a perfect 4-0 on the weekend.  Although King College also went 4-0, Mount Olive won by virtue of a tie-breaker on set differential vs. common opponents.  Mt. Olive defeated New Haven 3-0, while King dropped a set to New Haven, winning 3-1.  That small margin proved to be the difference.  Christiaan Rombaut of Mount Olive College was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

JAMAICA, NY— The York College men’s volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (30-19, 30-8, 30-20) win over St. Joseph’s College (BK) on Wednesday evening.  The Cardinals ran off 26 straight points between the second and third sets in the rout.
