PURCHASE, NY— The York College softball team pounded out a combined 30 hits and 40 runs and Thessaly Belizario tossed a no-hitter in game one en route to a sweep of the College of New Rochelle Saturday afternoon.  The Lady Cardinals took game one by a score of 22-0 and won game two 18-3.

 

Game One Recap

After plating four runs in the top of the first, York would add seven in the second and eight in the third off of New Rochelle pitching.  Shanay Patalano started the big second inning for York with a two-RBI single.  After advancing to second on the throw, Patalano would score on a Geneva Faulk base hit.  One batter later, Thessaly Belizario tripled home two more runs to give York a 9-0 cushion.  After Belizario scored on an error, Chiquita Greene tripled home a run to give York an 11-0 advantage after two innings of play.

 

In the third inning, York took advantage of three errors by New Rochelle to plate eight more runs.  Joviette Frederick and Shanay Patalano each had RBI singles in the inning.  

 

In the fourth inning, Belizario started the inning with a double and Averie Mohammed brought her in with a double of her own.  One batter later Greene would single home another run to make the score 2-0.  Two more runs would come in on errors to give York a 22-0 advantage.

 

Belizario went five innings, struck out six batters, walked three and did not allow a hit to earn her fourth win of the season. Shanay Patalano led York on offense, going 3-5 with three RBI’s and three runs.  Chiquita Greene also went 3-5, while scoring two runs and bringing home two more.  Fredrick was 2-4 with two runs and an RBI and Belizario was 2-4 with fours runs and 2 RBI’s.

 

Game Two Recap

Once again, York put the game out of reach early, scoring four runs in the first and eight in the second.  Laura Ulloa had the big knock for York in the first inning, bringing home two runs on a double. Faulk and Brittany Patalano also had RBI’s in the inning.

 

In the top of the second, Faulk brought home the first run of the inning with an RBI single.  An error on the single brought home an extra run and allowed Faulk to advance to second base.  Brittany Patalano would then bring Faulk home with a base hit, advancing to second on the throw.  After Patalano scored on a passed ball one batter later, Ulloa would add another RBI double to make the score 9-2.  Two batters later, Meriem Alahiane brought home two runs with a single. She would eventually come around to score and York would take a 12-2 lead after two frames.

 

York continued to hit the rest of the way, plating five more runs in the third and one in the fourth to round out the scoring.  Ulloa led York in game two, going 3-4 with five RBI’s.  Brittany Patalano finished 3-3 with three RBI’s and two runs scored and Faulk was 2-3 with three runs and two RBI’s.

 

Aileen Abad earned the win for York, striking out 11 batters and allowing just one earned run.

 

With the win, York improves to 6-18 on the season.  They will host City Tech on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.

QUEENS, NY – Freshman pitcher Thessaly Belizario threw a no-hitter in both ends of a doubleheader, slammed two home runs, including a grand slam, and collected eight RBI’s to lead the York College softball team to wins of 23-0 and 13-1 over conference-rival City Tech on Thursday afternoon.
