Student-Trainers Attend Conference on Concussions; Meet NY Giant Great, Harry Carson

NEW YORK, NY— A pair of student-trainers at York College, Beraiah Yisrael and Francilla Aquilera, had an opportunity to attend an important conference about concussions in sports recently, and also had the opportunity to meet former New York Giant great Harry Carson.

The conference, which was called “Head Injuries in Sports: Care, Conflict and Controversy was held on November 16 at the New York University Medical Center.   There were numerous experts on the panel that provided plenty of insight into head injuries in sports.

'The discussion was very informative,” said Yisrael.  I walked away with an understanding of what motivates players to keep playing.  I also walked away with a new appreciation for safety standards given to high-contact sports.”

Following the reception, students were given the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the panelists.  Along with meeting hall-of-famer, Harry Carson, the students made a lot of new contacts, which could possibly lead to internships in the future.

"Opportunities like this come along once in a students lifetime, said York Athletic Trainer,” Dan Matte.  “The students who participated benefitted greatly. Objectively I could see the light bulbs go on. They were more engaged in classes and fieldwork hours. It's hard to get students to put in time when they are not getting paid to work. The carrot is the grade but if there is no internal motivation, the student usually come up short or just does the minimum amount of hours. This was that internal motivation.”
