Nkrumah Named MVP, Wichkham Rookie of the Year, Pope Coach of the Year; Six Others Named All-Stars
JAMAICA, NY—York College junior, Alexandra Nkrumah, earned her third straight Athlete of the Year award to headline a sweep of the 2009 CUNY Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field post-season honors. Kadisha Wickham was named Rookie of the Year and Thomas Pope earned his second straight Coach of the Year award.
In addition, Shanine Bogan, Taneisha Renaud and Alexis Schloss were each named to the women’s all-star team. On the men’s side Chinedu Agu, Elijah Evelyn and Kenny Jacquet also earned all-star honors.
Nkrumah, once again had an incredible season for York leading her team to their third straight CUNYAC championship. She earned 56 points at the championships, the most of any athlete en route to winning her third Championship MVP award. Nkrumah also went on to qualify at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championships in the 100 and 400-meter hurdles and the 400-meter dash.
Wickham, who played basketball during the indoor season, burst upon the scene to help secure a dominating victory at the CUNYAC championships. She tallied 22 points for York, while also aiding the team to strong finishes in the 4x100 and 4x400 relay. In addition, Wickham qualified for the ECAC championships in the 100-meter dash.
Pope, now in his 13th season with York, has brought the Cardinals their 17th title combined between men’s and women’s cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field. It was the fourth title for the women’s outdoor team, who also won in 2002, 2007 and 2008.
Pete Charles and Lesliegh Hogg of Lehman College were named CUNYAC Athlete and Coach of the Year respectively and Max Zamor of Hunter College was tabbed as the Rookie of the Year.
