Lady Cardinals Edged by Hunter 67-62

, NY – The York College women’s basketball team struggled from the field all night and lost a tight game to conference-rival Hunter College, falling by a score of 67-62 Wednesday evening. 

 

The Lady Cardinals shot just 33 percent from the field and 17 percent from three-point range, while Hunter College shot 45 percent on the night.  The Hawks (9-6, 4-2 CUNYAC) featured a balanced scoring attack, with four players reaching double figures.  Shay Branch El-Vieolet led all scorers with 20 points on 9-13 shooting and Megan McKenna added 13 points and eight boards.

 

York (8-9, 3-4 CUNYAC) was led by Maimouna Dabo, who finished with a team-high 17 points. Kadisha Wickham finished with nine points and 12 rebounds and Elizabeth Padilla added 10 points. Niya Jarvis paced York with eight points and nine boards. 

 

The game went back-and-forth in the early going until the 7:45 mark in the first half when a McKenna lay-up gave the Hawks a 25-18 advantage.  York rallied and took a brief 42-41 lead after Jarvis jumper before the Hawks made a free-throw to tie the game up at halftime (42-42). 

 

The Hawks held a modest lead for the majority of the second half.  Late in the game, with 31 seconds left, the Lady Cardinals closed to within two points (64-62) after Jarvis converted one of two free throws.  The Hawks were fouled on their next possession and Deseree Boler made both free throws to put Hunter up by four points.  On the ensuing possession, York missed a three-pointer with eight seconds left and Hunter came up with the rebound to seal the victory. 

 

The Lady Cardinals will look to get back on track this Saturday when they visit St. Joseph’s College (BK) at 6:00 p.m. in a non-conference game.
