Lady Cardinals go Wire-to-Wire in Win over Medgar Evers

JAMAICA, NY – The York College women’s basketball team jumped out to an 11-0 lead to start the game and never looked back, going on to defeat Medgar Evers College 72-52 in a conference match-up Friday evening.  

 

The Lady Cardinals held Medgar Evers scoreless for the first five minutes of play and never trailed in the contest.  York continued to pour it on throughout the first half and took a 42-24 lead into the locker room. 

 

In the second half, the Cougars briefly closed to within 12 points after opening up the second half with a 6-0 run.   However, York responded with a run of its own and went up by 21 points (51-30) after an Elizabeth Padilla free throw with 14:21 to play. It was all York the rest of the way as the Lady Cardinals extended their lead to as many as 26 points in the second half.

 

Maimouna Dabo led York with 17 points, while Padilla finished with 15 points.  Niya Jarvis added 11 points, eight rebounds and seven steals and Kadisha Wickham finished with nine points and eight rebounds.

 

Medgar Evers’ Tiffany Thompson led all scorers with 20 points and 17 rebounds and Shakimba Pierre added 18 points and 12 rebounds. 

 

York improves to 11-10, 6-5 in the CUNYAC, while Medgar Evers falls to 7-14, 2-9 in the CUNYAC.  York will host Lehman College on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m

York forced 48 turnovers, which resulted in 46 York points and held the Cougars to just 29 percent shooting on the night.   On offense, York shot a strong 46 percent from the field.
