Esonwune Wins Third Straight Player of the Week Award

JAMAICA, NY— For the third consecutive week, York College junior center Marcel Esonwune has been named the CUNY Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.  It is also the fifth time this season he has earned the award. 

 

Esonwune continues to dominate the conference as he put together another phenomenal week. Against the College of Staten Island on Wednesday, Esonwune recorded 30 points on 11-15 shooting, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked five shots in a 102-61 win.  Then on Friday, he netted 17 points, grabbed ten boards and blocked a career-high eight shots in a loss to Medgar Evers College.

 

On the season, Esonwune is leading the country in both rebounds (14.7 per game) and blocked shots (3.5 per game).  He is averaging 18.4 points per game and is shooting 59 percent from the field this season.

 

York (17-6, 10-1 CUNYAC) will host Lehman College on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.

York Head Men’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Ronald St. John was honored by the Laurelton Lions Club with its Community Service Award. 

 

St. John was honored with the Community Service Award on May 23 at the Laurelton Lions Club 30th Charter Anniversary Celebration on May 23.  He also received a citation from the New York City Council recognizing his over 30 years of service to the York College community.
