Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Places Third at CUNYAC Championships

RANDALL'S ISLAND, N.Y.— The York College men's track and field team got contributions from a number of competitors and had a strong showing at the 2012 CUNY Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, placing third overall.  The Cardinals finished with 88 points, finishing behind runner-up Medgar Evers College (175 points) and champion CCNY (195). 

It was a true team effort, with several York competitors placing in events.  The Cardinals had a pair of first-place finishes in field events.  Steve Burnett won the hammer throw, with a winning toss of 35.99 meters, and Olabimpe M. Ologundudu finished tied for first in the high jump with a height of 1.81 meters.  York also got a third-place finish from Antonio Jean in the discuss, thanks to his toss of 35.33 meters.

In track events, York was led by junior Tarik Weekes, who was won the 400-meter dash, with an Eastern College Athletic Conference Qualifying time of 49.50.  Weekes was also fourth overall and first among senior colleges in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:59.61. 

York's best team showing was in the 5,000 meters, where the Cardinals took second and third, with Jason Shaw coming in at 18:36 and Kyle Gomes finishing a few seconds behind in 18:41. 

Christopher Peguero rounded out the Cardinals who placed in an event, following his third-place finish among senior colleges in the 400-meter hurdles (58.51). 

The 2012 season is over for most of the team, with the exception of Tarik Weekes.  He will compete in the 400-meter dash at the ECAC Championships on Friday, May 18 in Troy, NY on the campus of RPI.  That race will go off at approximately 1:25 p.m.
